Pakistan- Polio team remains safe as bomber explodes himself in Lakki

(MENAFN- Tribal News Network) LAKKI MARWAT: A suicide bomber aiming to target a polio vaccination team exploded himself in Serai Naurang area of Lakki Marwat on Thursday, but the vaccination team remained safe.

Police said the bomber wanted to target a polio vaccination team which was present in the area at that time. However, the bomber missed the target and exploded prematurely by mistake.

The blast created fear and panic in the area. The security forces arrived at the spot and launched a search operation after cordoning off the area. However, no arrest was made during the search operation. The vaccination campaign is continuing in Lakki Marwat and rest of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa since December 16.

Some other reports suggested that a rally was also planned in the area by the supporters of former president General (Retd) Pervez Musharraf against the Special Court verdict awarding him death sentence in the high treason case.

Deputy Commissioner Lakki Marwat Jehangir Azam said the polio vaccination team was at a distance of three kilometres from the blast site. However, vaccination campaign was suspended in the area and will be resumed after security clearance.

The suicide blast in Lakki Marwat happened a day after two police personnel appointed for providing security to vaccination teams during the ongoing anti-polio campaign in Lower Dir were shot dead.

Police said two constables Mukarram and Farmanullah were going for duty in the morning when unknown armed men opened fire on them near Markhani Lal Qala, leaving them dead on the spot.

Ten days ago, a female polio worker was shot dead in Bannu. Female polio worker Bastaj Bibi was travelling in a rickshaw in Nazeem Bazaar when unknown armed men opened fire on her, leaving her and the rickshaw driver critically injured. Both were shifted to Khalifa Gul Nawaz Hospital where they succumbed to their injuries.
