Sustainability core of Qatar's development


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Minister of Municipality and Environment, H E Abdulla bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie, said that Qatar has put many integrated sustainability plans and objectives under which 200 megawatt of solar power will be generated during the next two years that will be gradually increased to 500 megawatt.

H E the Minister said that integrated sustainability plans include perfect use and recycling of water; reduction of air pollution; recycling wastes; raising efficiency of energy use; increasing green areas and encouraging investments towards green economy.

Addressing the opening ceremony of Qatar Sustainability Summit 2019 yesterday, H E Al Subaie, said that Qatar through its National Vision 2030 has established a balance between the components of sustainable development, which includes community development, economic development and environmental sustainability.

H E the Minister said that Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani announced in his speech at UNGA session that the Sovereign Wealth Fund of Qatar will work on encouraging and promoting the green investment activity and adopting low-carbon economic growth, which will help in achieving climate objectives of Paris Agreement.

Held under the patronage of Prime Minister and Interior Minister H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani, Qatar Sustainability Summit (QSS) began yesterday at St. Regis Doha. Launched to drive climate actions and catalyse green initiatives, the two-day event will conclude today.  

As a co-organiser of QSS, the Gulf Organisation for Research & Development (GORD) is hosting its unique sessions with discussions and presentations focused on Qatar's efforts in sustainability & climate mitigation, decarbonisation opportunities, sustainable built environment, the region's energy challenges in achieving low-carbon development, climate change mitigation in the context of global policy dimensions and advanced eco-solutions among other areas of focus.

The Minister said that Qatar did not spare any effort in succeeding application of green buildings standards in governmental buildings and encouraging private sector on it as there are dozens of success stories in this field including big compounds and complete cities which gained highest degrees of green buildings standards.

The Minister said that these efforts have culminated with stadiums of 2022 FIFA World Cup, which have become global icons, as well as the State is working on making this Championship an environmentally-friendly and it will be the first ‘Carbon Neutral' Championship through using solar power in stadiums and using energy and water-saving cooling and lighting technology.

The Minister added that the Ministry is also working within its strategic plan of Urban Planning Sector on improving standard and quality of life through urban development and perfect planning of modern cities with efficient participation from significant sectors in the Ministry of Municipality and Environment.

In his welcome speech, Dr. Yousef Alhorr, Founding Chairman of GORD said: 'Qatar Sustainability Summit 2019 is being organised at a very delicate time as we are increasingly facing environmental and economic challenges, leading to the launch of United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals which aimed at achieving a better and sustainable future for present and future generations.

'In cooperation with Qatari Diar, GORD has unleashed its full potential and resources to implement a range of programs contributing towards the promotion of sustainability practices within built environment, said Alhorr. 

He said that the organisation's contribution in supporting the nation's sustainability agenda comes through the development of systems and standards such as the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) for green building certification.

'Today, we are proud to honour a number of entities that have demonstrated outstanding implementation of GSAS on their projects, exceeding the sustainability requirements within Qatar and beyond, said Alhorr.

He said that GORD has also developed Global Carbon Trust (GCT) a unique carbon registry program for the issuance of carbon credits. 'Going forward, God willing, GCT will be assisting the carbon neutrality for the host country emissions of 2022 FIFA World Cup, thanks to the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy for providing all the support needed in this journey.
