Oman- Eleven people rescued, one missing after Tuesday's rainfall

Eleven people were rescued from vehicles stuck in wadis as rain lashed many parts of Al Wusta and South Sharqiyah on Tuesday. One person is reported missing off the Duqm port area.

The Public Authority for Civil Aviation has said that direct effects of Hikaa on the two governorates are ending but there will be more rainfall in the coming 24 hours. 'Sea waves will continue to remain between medium and rough state,' it said.

 

Record rainfall in Duqm

The Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources has said Duqm recorded the highest rainfall at 119mm, followed by 76.2mm in Haima, 67mm in Al Jaser, 37mm in Mahout in Al Wusta and 35mm in Masirah in South Sharqiyah on Tuesday.

As a result of heavy rainfall, several teams of the Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources are engaged in clean-up operations in wilayats such as Duqm, Haima, Al Jaser, Mahout and Masirah.

Rescue operations

In the first case, six persons were rescued by the Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulances teams after their bus got stranded in overflowing Wadi al Agaiz in Haima on Tuesday.

Civil defence teams also rescued four citizens after their vehicles got stuck in the same wadi.

In the third case, another person was rescued while another is reported missing after a boat sank in the Duqm port area.

 

ROP warning

The ROP has warned drivers against crossing overflowing wadis. 'Crossing an overflowing wadi can attract an imprisonment up to three months and a fine of RO500, or one of these, according to Article 49 of the Traffic Law,' said an ROP official.

The official urged drivers to be careful while driving on wet roads to avoid skidding. 'This is to ensure that they do not lose control of the vehicle.'
