Doha: To ensure the security and safety with the opening of the new academic year 2019-2019, the General Directorate of Traffic is set to intensify its presence near schools and busy streets.

'We have chalked out a traffic plan to ease traffic jams around schools to facilitate movement in the streets when students enter and exit. The plan covers all areas in the country particularly areas which have more schools and densely populated. In such areas, we will deploy more traffic patrols, said First Lieutenant Khalid Abdullah Al Kuwari, officer at Traffic Patrols and Investigation Department at the General Directorate of Traffic.

Regarding awareness, Al Kuwari, while speaking to a local media channel, pointed out that Department will conduct many awareness programmes and will distribute awareness booklets and brochures from Monday for two weeks that would carry traffic safety rules material. The awareness plan includes visits to minimum four schools daily.

Every year, with the beginning of first day of new academic year, streets usually witness traffic jams on many major roads, especially around the schools. The traffic jam is particularly witnessed near schools and residential areas due to traffic rules violations committed by hasty parents who reach schools with delay and then park their vehicles on non-designated places.

Other departments of the Ministry of Interior have also taken all preventive measures whether related to the availability of security and safety requirements in schools and educational buildings or traffic to enable road users to reach their destinations easily.

For his part, First Lieutenant Abdul Hadi Ali Al Marri, Officer at Media and Preventive Education Section at the General Directorate of Civil Defence, said there is coordination between the Directorate and the Ministry of Education and Higher Education regarding the provision of security and safety requirements in all schools.

'The Civil Defence visits schools to check the availability of safety requirements and compliance with civil defence procedures in order to maintain the safety of students and school staff, he added. The private schools are also subject to this system of the availability of security and safety procedures, where the Civil Defence conducts sudden inspection campaigns on these schools to ensure their commitment to the availability of all safety devices and systems.

Regarding the awareness aspect, he said that the Media and Preventive Education Section hold an awareness plan after the regular study began in all schools in the state. It will organise awareness lectures for students to educate them on the requirements of security and safety.

He said the directorate has provided through the Ministry's website requests for awareness and traffic education for schools wishing to implement an awareness programme with the General Directorate of Civil Defence, for which electronic registration on the Ministry's website is required.
