As new academic year 2019-2020 is set to begin soon, the sales of stationery items have soared in commercial markets across the country. Many shopping malls and hypermarkets have started offering fresh stocks of school supplies with bold displays and some promotion offers.

'The customers' rush started almost a week ago but it increased significantly in the last two days. Before the opening of schools, parents and students want to buy different school supplies like bags, pencils, notebooks etc. Like every year, we are offering fresh arrival at economical price, said a salesman at a hypermarket.

Regarding promotional offers and discounts on school supplies, he said that so far they did not announce such offers but from the next week discounts on some selected items might be announced. The Peninsula visited a number of book shops at shopping malls and stationery spots in hypermarkets but found no special discounts on school supplies.

Some outlets at shopping malls said they did not intend to announce discounts as these were the peak sales times they were waiting for. 'School supplies are in demand for only a short period of the year, said a salesman at a book and stationery shop of a local mall.

'We have started buying school needs of our children. The prices so far are expensive. One child's school supplies cost more than QR200 especially KG1 and KG2, said Naheed, a parent shopping at a local hypermarket.

'The opening of schools is an expensive time for parents. Some families bring school supplies from their home countries claiming that they are cheaper there, said another parent, Wafaa.

She added: 'I have two children studying in primary school and I have already visited two malls but the prices are almost same everywhere. There is no special discount offers and if there are some they are on small items like pencils, colour pencils etc. School bags in absence of any promotional offer are usually costly and a normal, good quality school bag costs around QR130.

Meanwhile, the sixth annual edition of the ‘Back to School' campaign began yesterday which is being organized by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education in cooperation with a number of partners and supporters under the slogan ‘With Education We Build Qatar'. It aims to prepare students for the new academic year and provide them with necessary advice and guidance.
