What is Urethane and why do you need to know?
(MENAFN- PRLog) -- What is Urethane? It's the windshield glue, or adhesive, used for windshield installations. The most important thing about how your windshield is attached to the frame of your car is in the glue. These are a few things to know about urethane when having your windshield replaced.
Today many new windshields are manufactured with electrical components running directly through them like heads up displays, electrochromic mirrors, rain sensors, and antennas. With all these technological advances that have been made in automotive glass, vehicle manufacturers now require high modulus, non conductive properties to be included in their adhesives.
When non conductive adhesives are used they create an electrical barrier between the glass and the body of the vehicle significantly reducing electrical currents. High modulus urethanes can measure the ability of the adhesive to withstand a number of stresses. These adhesives are used because they are strong, giving them a higher resistance and tolerance of pressure. As an added bonus, they can actually lessen the amount of outside noise that you hear in the cabin of your car. Your ride will be quieter, giving you a better overall driving experience. If this adhesive is not used it will cause you to run into problems with certain features not working properly.
Once your new windshield is installed, there are a few things you should do not to ruin the results of replacement work. In order for the urethane to completely set, you should wait to wash your car for at least 24 hours to decrease damage to the seal. It is also recommended to keep at least one window open,about an inch, to avoid pressure building inside of the vehicle causing a hole in the seal, resulting in air and water leaks.
