Alice Wells to Discuss Afghanistan in Islamabad Visit


(MENAFN- Daily Outlook Afghanistan) An officialsaid the US is agreeing to restart talks and cooperation in many areas,including trade and higher education.
WASHINGOTN -The US Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South and CentralAsian Affairs Alice Wells will visit Islamabad on Monday for talks that willbasically focus on bilateral and Afghanistan, Pakistani officials said.
Alice Wellswill hold a meeting with the Pakistani civil and military leadership to discussbilateral issues and Afghan peace process.
She had openedthe talks with the Taliban in July last year but the US peace envoy forAfghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad has been dealing with the Afghan issue.
Pakistanimedia reported that the visit is aimed to strengthen the bilateral ties betweenthe two countries.
Before this, USdefense department notified the Congress last week of its decision to approvemilitary sales worth $125 million logistic and technical support for Pakistan'sF-16 fleet days after Prime Minister Imran Khan met President Donald Trump atthe White House.
Both sideswill also have followed up talks in the wake of understanding between PrimeMinister Khan and President Trump, according to the report.
However, it'snot yet clear that she will also visit Afghanistan during her trip to Pakistan.
Earlier onThursday, Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan had assured Khalilzad ofIslamabad's full cooperation for the restoration of long-lasting peace inAfghanistan. (Tolo news)
