Kuwait urges Afghanis to intensify efforts to end conflict

Date:

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) NEW YORK, July 26 (KUNA) -- Kuwait on Friday called on all Afghani parties to double their diplomatic efforts to iron out differences and help end bloodshed in their war-torn country.
"We urge all parties to participate constructively in diplomatic efforts to achieve peace in order to promote the interests and wellbeing of the Afghan people," said Kuwait's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Mansour Al-Otaibi in a special UN Security Council session on the women, peace and security in Afghanistan.
He stressed that military operations had never brought a lasting peace.
"Kuwait deeply believes that a lasting peace in Afghanistan and the whole region will be achieved through a negotiated diplomatic settlement," he said.
The Kuwaiti envoy stated that while the path to peace has difficulties, the starting point should be national and inclusive reconciliation.
He reiterated Kuwait's condemnation of attacks against Afghan civilians and stressed that perpetrators must be brought to justice.
Al-Otiabi underscored the importance of international and regional efforts for peace in Afghanistan.
He also hailed the positive outcome of the Afghan talks in Qatar several days ago and the US-Afghan announcement on Thursday of an agreement to intensify efforts to reach a negotiated settlement of the crisis in Afghanistan.
"We cannot talk about political reconciliation without discussing the central role of women," he continued, citing their important role in society," the Kuwaiti envoy said.
"Women must be empowered to participate in political and reconciliation processes."
He reiterated that the diplomatic efforts in Afghanistan must be accompanied by a large investment in the education and infrastructure. (end)
