Swine fever in Laos

Local daily Vientiane Times has reported on Tuesday that the northern Lao district of Phongsaly has registered cases of swine fever, according to Xinhua.

The fever was first found out in Salvan, the southern region of Lao, it falls around 670 km in the southeast direction of Vientiane, the capital, then more cases were detected in parts of Vientiane and Savannakhet region which falls some 410 km east of Vientiane.

The latest virus outbreak has been reported to have killed around 338 pigs in two areas in Phongsaly.

Tests were performed by the Agriculture and Forestry Office and verified the existence of the African swine fever in two villages of Khua district of Phongsaly regionj.

People are able to spread the swine fever but can't catch it from animals, the disease affects pigs and wild boars and death is almost guaranteed, high temperatures are required to kill the virus, researches have showed that the virus can stay alive for year in dried meat and three years in frozen meat.
