Kuwait addresses UN forum on national sustainable development


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KUWAIT, July 18 (KUNA) -- The State of Kuwait delegation that took part IN United Nations High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) -- themed "empowering people and ensuring integration and equality" -- presented the country's first voluntary report on objectives of sustainable development at the national level.
In a statement following the forum, Secretary General of the Supreme Planning and Development Council Dr. Khaled Mahdi said Kuwait is proud of participating in the forum which witnessed, the first time, the Kuwaiti side presentation of the report with respect of implementing objectives of the sustainable development for the 2030 agenda, in cooperation with EQUATE Petrochemical Company, Environment Public Authority (EPA), Kuwait Foundation for Advancement of Sciences and the Kuwaiti Umniah" Environmental Project.
The Kuwaiti delegation shed light on executed projects included in the 2030 agenda, Dr. Mahdi said, also noting in this respect active participation of the Kuwaiti private sector, civil societies as well as the public sector in the execution of the relevant ventures.
One of the most significant messages addressed within framework of the report was Kuwait's adherence to developing human resources, based on equal rights, opportunities, environmental, social and economic sustainability.
Moreover, Kuwait has affirmed its commitment to peace, human dignity at the national, regional and universal levels, in addition to global partnership and solidarity, he noted.
For his part, Dr. Mohammad Abdulwahab Ramadan, Director of Research at KFAS, said the Kuwaiti delegation represented several national institutions adding that the KFAS team participated in activities on renewable energy.
KFAS has been keen on implementing sustainable development in line with a pledge by His Highness the Amir to make this energy account to 15 percent of the overall generated power in the country by 2030.
Meanwhile, Abeer Suleiman Al-Omar, EQUATE's Public Relations Assistant CEO, indicated that she addressed the event about the Kuwaiti sustainable strategy.
Abdullah Ahmad Al-Sharrah, the second secretary of the State of Kuwait delegation at the UN, indicated Kuwait has been adhering to goals of sustainable development since 2015, when His Highness the Amir inked alongside world leaders a declaration in this respect for the 2030 agenda.
Fatma Al-Taher, EPA's representative, said the authority representatives addressed the conferees about the Kuwaiti environmental regulations, partly with respect of regular measuring pollutants.
Sanaa Al-Qamlas, a co-founder of Umniah, noted the cooperation with the supreme planning council for attain sustainable development goals, indicating that the Kuwaiti team briefed the other participants about the project "that has contributed to changing the environmental culture" in Kuwait. (end)
