Gazette issued declaring Sri Lanka Railways an essential service
(MENAFN- Colombo Gazette) A gazette notice has been issued declaring Sri Lanka Railways an essential service.
The gazette was issued after trade unions decided to continue to stage a one day strike every week.
Trade unions had protested last week over an issue regarding salary anomalies.
The strike was suspended but it was later decided to stage a strike once a week till the demands are met.
The Transport Ministry has now decided to recruit retired train engine drivers to operate the trains during the strike in the event the engine drivers fail to report to work despite the gazette notice being issued.
