Kuwait calls on int'l community to financially support UNRWA
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) NEW YORK, June 26 (KUNA) -- Kuwait called on the international community to financially aid the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to support its work and efforts.
The remarks were made by deputy permanent representative of the Kuwaiti mission at the UN headquarters in New York counselor Bader Al-Munaikh, during the meeting of the Ad Hoc Committee of the General Assembly for the Announcement of Voluntary Contributions to UNRWA late Tuesday.
Since its establishment in 1949, UNRWA has been providing programs on education, health and social care to over five million Palestinian refugees, he said.
Kuwait is continuously supporting UNRWA, as the Palestinian cause is a priority to the country, Al-Munaikh noted. He added that Kuwait had donated USD 50 million for the agency last September, in response to an urgent appeal launched by the UN body.
Meanwhile, the Kuwaiti official said that UNRWA has been suffering a great deficit in 2018 and 2019, also stressing the need for further global cooperation to resolve this issue.
Moreover, hecalled on the international community to pressure Israel into committing to the international law and the humanitarian law, end the siege on Gaza Strip and allow freedom of movement to Palestinians. (end)
