Oman takes part in antimicrobial resistance conference

The sultanate participated in the second Ministerial conference on Antimicrobial Resistance in Noordwijk in the Netherlands. The delegation was headed by H E Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Obaid al Sa'eedi, Minister of Health.

The conference was organised and hosted by the Netherlands in cooperation with the World health Organization (WHO), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).

As per a statement, the conference was attended by 45 participants from the ministries of health and ministries of agriculture and animal health around the world.

H E Dr Sa'eedi was accompanied by specialists in antimicrobial resistance from the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.

The conference aimed to discuss results and successes of the overall implementation of the Global Action Plan (GAP) on antimicrobial resistance, the progress made by the participating countries to implement the GAP, draw upon the experiences of these countries by establishing bilateral partnerships between the countries and twinning initiatives among various countries. During the first day of the conference, the Minister of Health gave a detailed explanation about the efforts made by the sultanate to address the antimicrobial resistance problem. He also explained that the sultanate had approved a national strategic plan, which was prepared by all relevant sectors.

He also added that a national antimicrobial resistance committee has been formed under the chair of the Undersecretary for Health Affairs in the Ministry of Health and membership of two representatives from all government and academic authorities in the sultanate. The committee is responsible for preparing the national strategy and action plan.
