(MENAFN- The Peninsula) QNADoha: Director of Meteorology Department at the Civil Aviation Authority Abdulla Al Mannai has stressed that rumours spreading on social media regarding a significant rise in temperatures that would reach 80 degrees Celsius were pure speculation.
He told Qatar News Agency yesterday that the temperature levels currently recorded are at a natural level and have not seen any unprecedented increases. He added that the current increase in temperature was in line with the regular levels of summer months in the country, and noted that there was no indication of a severe increase in temperature in the coming period.
He noted that the temperature levels recorded during June this year did not exceed that of the same month of last year, adding that the highest temperature registered this month was 48.2 degrees Celsius.
He said that the world has seen a rise in temperatures, highlighting that Qatar registered in 1973 temperatures between 40 and 42 degrees Celsius only.
Responding to a question on the accuracy of temperature sensors in cars, especially that it always gives a higher recording than the department official ones, Al Mannai said that those sensors are affected by a number of factors, one of which is being located too close to the engine. Another factor that impacts the sensor's accuracy, according to the director of the department, is its exposure to car exhaust.
He said that any temperature sensor of any kind must follow the guidelines and standards set by the World Meteorological Organisation in order to accurately detect temperature.
Al Mannai encouraged the public to rely on official sources when looking to gain information on temperature. He recommended visiting the department's official website or following its verified accounts on various social media platforms.
He called on workers to follow the guidelines issued by the designated authorities and urged not to pressure workers to finish work that would see them get sun exposure.
Al Mannai also stressed on the importance of not leaving children alone in the car and ensuring that no one is in the car before closing it.
