Lithuanian Parliament recognizes deportation of Crimean Tatars as genocide
"In the adopted document [resolution on 'recognition of the Soviet Union's policy of destruction of the Crimean Tatars as the genocide], the Seimas condemned the destruction and deportation of the Crimean Tatar people from their homeland to the deserted regions of Central Asia in 1944, which had been planned and implemented by the totalitarian Soviet regime. As a result of deportation, the majority of deported Crimean Tatars died from hunger, disease, torture and hard labor," the press service of the Parliament of Lithuania reports.
At the same time, the Seimas resolution also condemns the illegal occupation and annexation of the Ukrainian Crimea by the Russian Federation in 2014, discrimination against the civilian population and the Crimean Tatars based on language, culture, religion and nationality, as well as the abolition of the Crimean Tatar self-government.
77 lawmakers voted for the resolution (one abstained).
On May 10, the Parliament of Latvia recognized the deportation of the Crimean Tatars as the genocide and condemned Russia's current policy towards them after the illegal annexation of Crimea.
