Qatar- Ashghal announces partial opening of Al Oqda Street

The Public Works Authority ‘Ashghal' announced the opening of a part of Al Oqda Street on Sunday (May 26). The importance of the street comes from its location north of Al Bayt Stadium, and represents the link between two main roads, Al Khor Road and a road leading to Al Shamal Road, it also facilitates the access to Al Bayt Stadium, one of the 2022 World Cup stadiums.

Eng. Ali Ashkanani, Head of Northern Areas Section, pointed out that the section that was opened from the street is about 2.8km long and includes three lanes in each direction with a 3m-wide pedestrian path provided on each side of the street.

In order to increase traffic flow, Ashghal implemented four signal-controlled intersections at the street, as well as the installation of barriers to improve traffic safety on the street. The works also included the installation of 145 lighting poles and the construction of a 2.5 km long drainage network.

Al Oqda Street works is part of the project to upgrade link roads to Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor, which features the construction of 5.3km of roads, and 8 m-wide pedestrian path and cycle path, in addition to landscaping and pavement works that will be carried out at the surrounding roads.

Intelligent telecommunications systems (ITS) will be installed in this project In addition to the installation of specific street lighting poles similar to those used inside the Stadium, the street lighting will be provided using energy saving LED lamps. The project also includes linking the stadium to a sewer and surface water drainage networks.

Ashghal has started the implementation of the project to upgrade link roads to Al Bayt Stadium in Q4 2017, the progress of the project reached 48% and it is scheduled for completion in Q4 2019.
