EU says IAEA responsible to verify Iran's uranium enrichment activities

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, May 21 (KUNA) -- The European Union (EU) Tuesday said that it for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to undertake the necessary verification and monitoring when it comes to Iran's nuclear related commitments.
"So far IAEA has confirmed in 14 consecutive reports that Iran has been implementing these commitments," Maja Kocijancic, spokesperson for EU High Representative Federica Mogherini, told a news conference in Brussels.
"These commitments also include the threshold of low enriched uranium that is set in the JCPOA," the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, she said.
"We as the European Union strongly support the independent role that the IAEA has in verifying Iran's compliance with the latest comprehensive safeguard agreements, the additional protocol and the JCPOA," she said.
The EU remains committed to the full and effective implementation of the JCPOA as long as Iran continues to complement its nuclear related commitments, added the EU spokesperson.
The EU reaction came after Iranian officials yesterday said that Tehran has quadrupled its uranium-enrichment production capacity.
Iranian media quoted Behrouz Kamalvandi, the spokesman of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, saying that Iran took this step because the US had ended a programme allowing it to exchange enriched uranium to Russia for unprocessed yellowcake uranium, as well as ending the sale of heavy water to Oman.
Kamalvandi said Tehran had informed the IAEA of its decision. (end)
