Algeria: Heads of municipalities of eastern state of Bejaia confirm their boycott of presidential elections


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ALGIERS, May 16 (KUNA) -- The heads of the municipalities of the eastern Algerian state of Bejaia on Thursday said they would boycott the presidential elections scheduled for July 4, calling on all candidates to join the initiative and boycott this election date.
They said in a statement that the meeting held by local officials on Wednesday evening allowed the renewal of the emphasis on boycotting the next election date.
"The decision of the heads of the People's Assembly of the State of Bejaia is a fulfillment of the commitment to the popular revolution and movement that began last February 22nd", they added.
For the signatories to the statement, the presidential elections scheduled for July 4 are not considered an answer to the demands for change confirmed by millions of Algerians in all states," they stated.
They also appealed to all mayors throughout the country "to participate in the march on Friday (May 17th) in Algiers and to join the initiative, which is intended to reject the recommendation of the regime."(end).
