About 8,000 people cross Iran's Astara border within month

In the second month of the current Iranian year (started March 21, 2019), the number of Iranian and foreign citizens who crossed the Astara border checkpoint in Iran's Gilan province reached 8,000, said Mansour Babai, an official with Astara Customs Administration, Trend reports via IRNA.
Babai noted that Astara border checkpoint is one of the main border checkpoints in Iran, used actively by both Iranian and foreign citizens.
In 2019, in the period of March 15-April 5, compared to the same period of 2018, the number of those who crossed Astara border checkpoint increased by 40 percent in connection with Novruz holiday (Persian New Year), he said.
Astara border checkpoint needs modern equipment to battle illegal currency and goods movements, smuggling, Babai added.
Astara county of Iran's Gilan province borders the Republic of Azerbaijan and over one million Iranian and foreign citizens cross borders of the county annually.
