Greece records 15,000 victims of smoking every year
(MENAFN) A study suggested by the Hellenic Pulmonary Society revealed that at least 15,000 Greeks pass away every year of smoking-linked causes, while they pay between 25 and 30 million euros (USD 28-33.6 million) annually to buy cigarettes.
The unexpected toll was recorded in Trikala, a city in Greece which is the first smoke-free city of the country, ahead of the World No Tobacco Day, which is held every year on May 31.
The study also showed that 37 percent of Greek adults smoke, and Greek women stay the world's heading smokers, resuming the unhealthy habit even during pregnancy.
36 percent of women confessed to smoking at the early stages of their pregnancy, and only 19 percent were able to stop the addiction.
