(MENAFN) football legend Jose Rodrigues Neto was pronounced dead at the age of 69 after suffering a blood clot.

Former Brazil defender Rodrigues passed away while admitted at the Bonsucesso hospital in Rio de Janeiro on Monday.

In a statement, Rodrigues' former club Flamengo commented "it is with immense sadness that we inform of the passing of Rodrigues Neto, one of the greatest players in Flamengo's history."

Rodrigues, a football ace, played in a total of 438 matches for the Rio de Janeiro club from 1967 to 1975, and has also played for Fluminense, Botafogo, Internacional and Boca Juniors.
