Nurse jailed for infecting children with genital warts

(MENAFN- Asia Times) A nurse in Vietnam has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after being found guilty of infecting children with genital warts. On Wednesday, Hoang Thi Hien, 50, was found guilty by the Hung Yen Province People's Court of violating medical regulations and negligence and was given a 10-year jail term, VN Express reported. She will also be barred from practicing for three years after her release.

In addition, Hien was ordered to provide compensation totaling 2.2 billion dong (US$94,850) to 111 of the 117 people she allegedly infected.

According to the court, Hien ran an unlicensed medical service at home that examined the genitals of children and charged up to 520,000 dong for each treatment. It was discovered she had been using unsterilized equipment to treat phimosis, which caused children to contract human papillomavirus (HPV), subsequently giving them genital warts.

The warts outbreak took place in July 2017 when about 80 boys – most of them under two years old – were diagnosed with HPV, which prompted health inspectors to launch an investigation.
