Two goals within a span of three minutes helped Esperance Sportive de Tunis (EST) to overcome the challenge of Club Athlétique Bizertin (CAB) 2-1 and win the Tunisian Super Cup.
Yesterday, at the Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium, home of Duhail Sports Club, EST managed to recover from Friday's African Super Cup loss to against Raja Casablanca in Doha to take home the trophy.
EST started on an impressive note and there was no stopping them.
They started on a decisive notw with Anice Badri (13) and Taha Yassine Khenissi (16) giving the Esperance the early advantage.
CAB fought back and equalised in the 33rd minute. The referee awarded a penalty to CAB which came when Ibrahim Ouatara was brought down by a rival player. Abdelhalim Darraji converted the resultant penalty to give CAB a glimmer of hope.
In the second half, both teams exerted pressure but could not trouble the scorers.
The second period promised to be hotly contested, but a red card inflicted on Wissem Bousnina in the 50th minute after two yellow cards in two minutes completely shattered CAB hopes of a comeback goal.
Esperance players on the other hand found a lot of space which allowed them to create dangerous move on several occasions, but could not increase the tally.
CAB goalkeeper Khemaies Thamri shone especially in the second period against the attacks of the EST.
But despite several dangerous situations, the score did not move and Esperance Tunis finally won the title. The Tunisian Super Cup is an annual fixture between the Tunisian Ligue Professionnelle 1 champions and the winners of the Tunisian Cup. Since its return in 1994, the one-off clash has been organised only three times in 1994, 1995 and 2001.
