Arabi bounce back with Qatar Cup triumph

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) A motivated Al Arabi defeated Al Wakrah to win the Qatar Cup basketball tournament yesterday.
At the Al Gharafa Sports Club indoor hall, Al Arabi, coming off a loss against Al Shamal in the QBF League playoff final earlier in the month, overcame Al Wakrah's little run in the first quarter (19-15) to win the final 75-71.
'We were motivated to win today after losing Qatar Basketball League playoff recently. We played to our potential and won the cup, Al Arabi coach Hatem Mamlouk said after the final.
After losing the first quarter, Byrd led the Al Arabi's second-quarter turnaround as they finished the quarter with a lead of two points (33-31). Arabi then increased the lead to 10 points (57-47) at the end of the third quarter. However, Al Wakrah managed to stage some fightback in the fourth quarter, but Arabi held on to the decisive lead till the end.
William Earl Byrd Jr was yet again the star of the show for the winners with 20 points. He also had nine rebounds and one assist. Arabi's Khalid Suliman Abdi also chipped in with 18 points with four rebounds and three assists. However, a match-high 23-point effort by Al Wakrah's Shawn Taggart went in vain. Louis Munks III and Jasmon Youngblood contributed 19 and 18 points respectively for Al Wakrah.
