Greece: 20 face charges over fatal blaze
(MENAFN) Greek prosecutors had filed charges against 20 people, mainly serving and previous officials, over the wildfire incidence of July 23 last summer near Athens, which claimed 100 lives, according to Greek national news agency AMNA.
The arrested included Attica Regional Governor Rena Dourou, two mayors, ex- general secretary for civil protection Yannis Kapakis, the previous Fire Brigade chief as well as the recent leader who was serving as deputy chief at the time, who were charged with negligent arson and negligent manslaughter.
An elderly man who is suspected of triggering the fire to burn wood at his backyard, is also among the 20 charged.
Triggered by raging winds, the flames swept through the seaside resort of Mati, some 30 kilometers northeast of Athens, killed entire families in some cases.
