Dutch Koeman named Oman coach

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- The Oman Football Association (OFA) on Wednesday decided to keep its trust with Dutch trainers as Erwin Koeman was named as the new coach of the Red Warriors. The announcement of Koeman to succeed Pim Verbeek, another coach from the Netherlands, was made after the OFA board meeting concluded under the chairmanship of Sheikh Salim al Wahaibi. Koeman has been appointed coach for two years starting March 10.

Koeman had arrived in Muscat on Monday to spark strong speculation of him being the successor to Verbeek, who had resigned earlier this month.

Verbeek had cited personal reasons to quit after leading Oman for the first time in the knockout stage of 2019 Asian Cup in the UAE.

The 57 year old Erwin, who is the elder of the famous Koeman siblings, had last served as the interim coach of Turkish giant Fenerbahce. His younger brother, Ronald Koeman, is the manager of the Netherlands team.

Said Othman al Balushi, the OFA chief executive, toldMuscat Daily on Wednesday, 'The board agreed to appoint Koeman as the coach of national team on a two-year contract.'

Koeman's managerial career started at the renowned Dutch club, PSV Eindhoven, as a U21 manager and later as club's assistant manager in 2001.

He then had stints with another big Holland club, Feyenoord, before taking up the task as Hungary manager from April 2008-July 2010.

Koeman then worked as assistant to his brother Ronald at Southampton and Everton before joining Turkish club last August.
