A Brunei national has been fined 10,000 ringgit (US$2,390) for overstaying his visa in Sabah, Malaysia. Mohammad Saidina Ali, 23, pleaded guilty to the overstaying charge on December 7 at a Sessions Court in Sabah, The Borneo Post reported.

Ali was caught at a house in Kampung Ulu, Sipitang, in Sabah. Assistant Superintendent of Police Sabrina Jinius handed Ali's expired passport to the court. According to sources, the passport expired in July 14, 2017.

Nine other men aged between 20 and 52 also appeared in the court charged with entering the state without proper documentation. All pleaded guilty to the charges under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act, which carries a maximum fine of 10,000 ringgit or a maximum jail term of five years, or both, along with a whipping.

Two of the elderly convicts were spared, while the rest were whipped. The Immigration Department will take their biometric data upon their release for deportation after they complete their sentences.
