Oman- 13 projects win National Research Award


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- Thirteen research projects won the National Research Award at the fifth edition of The Research Council's (TRC) Annual Research Forum held at Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre on Sunday.

While six projects won under the first category of the award, PhD holders, seven projects won within the award's second category, young researchers.

For the PhD category, Prof Abdullah Ambusaidi won under the Education and Human Resources sector for his project titled 'Introducing School Gardens to the Omani Context: A Preliminary Study with Grade 7 Classes', while Dr Imran Baig won under the Information Systems and Communication Technologies sector for his project titled 'A Precoding-Based Multicarrier Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access Scheme for 5G Cellular Networks'.

In the Cultural, Basic, and Social Sciences sector, the award went to the project of 'Determination of Common Adulterants in Herbal Medicine and Food Samples using Core-shell Column Coupled to Tandem Mass Spectrometry' by Dr Haider al Lawati. For the Environmental and Biological Resources sector, Mohamed al Farsi won for his project titled 'Quality Evaluation of Omani Honey'.

For the Health and Social Service sector, 'Integrase-Controlled Excision of Metal-Resistance Genomic Islands in Acinetobacter baumannii' by Dr Zaaima al Jabri won, while Muhammad S Khan won the Energy and Industry sector for his project 'Impact of the Alkyne Substitution Pattern and Metalation on the Photoisomerisation of Azobenzene-Based Platinum (II) Diynes and Polyynes'.

For the young researcher's category, Khalsa Abdullah al Alawi won under the Education and Human Resources sector for her project that addressed the 'Effect of Using Ethical Analysis Approach in the Development of Decision Making Skills and Academic Achievement in Biology Among Grade Twelve Female Student', while Faiza Ali al Salti won under the Information Systems and Communication Technologies sector for his project titled 'EMGGR: an energy-efficient multipath grid-based geographic routing protocol for underwater wireless sensor networks'.

In the Cultural, Basic, and Social Sciences sector, the award went to the project of 'Characterisation and application of nanocolloidal Mn (IV) in a chemiluminescence system or estimating the total phenolic content in pomegranate juices using a nanodroplet microfluidics platform' by Baqia Ali al Mughairy.

Under the Environmental and Biological Resources sector, the award was shared by Karima al Bulushi and Buthayna al Ghafri, for their projects, 'Optimisation and economic evaluation of the supercritical carbon dioxide extraction of waxes from waste date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) leaves' and 'Photocatalytic microbial removal and degradation of organic contaminants of water using PES fibres', respectively.

For the Health and Social Service sector, 'The super sickling haemoglobin HbS-Oman a study of red cell sickling K' by Halima Wali al Balushi won, while Farrukh Jamil won the Energy and Industry sector for his project 'Optimisation of oil extraction from waste Date pits for biodiesel production'.

TRC also awarded the top research projects under the Faculty Mentored Research Award Program (FURAP).

Out of the total of the 136 research projects received by TRC in 2018 competing for both the categories of the award, 99 research projects were under the PhD holders category, and 37 were under the young researchers category.

Dr Hilal bin Ali al Hinai, secretary general, said, TRC received 1,544 funding applications for research projects and 860 funding applications for innovation projects from 2009 to 2018, out of which TRC funded 615 research projects, and 100 innovation projects.
