Thousands demand quick exit from coal

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Thousands of people took to the streets of Cologne yesterday to accelerate Germany's exit from coal, with the event coming just two days ahead of the UN climate talks in neighbouring Poland.
The protest dubbed 'Stop coal! Climate protection now! was organised by groups that included Greenpeace, non-governmental organisation Friends of the Earth Germany, and advocacy group Campact.
Chancellor Angela Merkel's government signed off on Germany's exit from coal production more than a decade ago, and it has been under pressure to show progress ahead of the annual UN climate talks in Poland next week.
'This is a protest against the failure of the government, which is going to the climate conference with empty hands, Greenpeace chief executive Martin Kaiser told DPA.
