Syria: 70 members of SDF die in IS attack

(MENAFN) A war monitor declared that over 70 members of the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have died as 100 more were injured within 24 hours, after a counter-offensive carried out by the extremist Islamic State (IS) in eastern Syria.

The IS counter-offensive against the SDF was launched on Friday and kept going Saturday, during which the terror-designated group reclaimed control over areas occupied by the SDF during a continuous showdown in the last IS-held pocket in the eastern countryside of Deir al-Zour in eastern Syria.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed that the air forces of U.S.-led coalition, which are supporting the SDF in its efforts to overcome IS on the eastern bank of Euphrates River, wasn't able to back the SDF in fighting the IS over bad weather conditions.

About 4,000 IS militants are present in eastern Deir al-Zour near the Iraqi border, according to the Britain-based watchdog group.
