Afghanistan: 16 Taliban militants die in IED blast


(MENAFN) Provincial police declared that 16 Taliban militants have died after an improvised explosive device (IED) they were creating prematurely blasted in eastern Ghazni province early Monday.

Officials confirmed that over 11 security force members and 67 Taliban militants have died in battles in five Afghan provinces as clashes erupt elsewhere in the country.

Disturbance has been escalating as Afghan security forces combat against the militants' stepped up attacks at the time when the country is getting ready for the parliamentary and district councils elections slated for later this month.

At least 54,000 Afghan army troopers and police personnel would be dispatched to secure 5,100 polling stations through the country during the upcoming Oct. 20 elections.
