SWANSEA, United Kingdom, 2nd September, 2018 (WAM) -- Researchers, government officials, academics and development experts have convened for a three-day global conference on preventing and countering violent extremism (P/CVE).

Participants of the Conference identified the current needs for on-the-ground implementation of P/CVE programmes and ways in which theoretical P/CVE knowledge and research can support its coherent and practical implementation.

The ever-changing manifestation of violent extremism continues to threaten the societies and is adapting to new technologies and methods of communications. Addressing pressing relevant topics in these areas were central to the Conference, with discussions focusing on religious-based and far-right narratives and counter-narratives, recruitment and technology, media, education, reintegration among others.

The Fifth Annual International CVE Research Conference 2018 was held by Hedayah, M & C Saatchi, Swansea University, Trends Research and Advisory and UN Women. It is sponsored in part by the European Union STRIVE Global Programme and the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Spain and the Republic of Turkey.

In efforts to enhance international collaboration and burden-sharing on P/CVE efforts, Hedayah created a model where a number of institutions co-sponsored and co-organised the Conference. This year's Conference was sponsored and in strategic partnership with the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, UN Women, Australian Strategic Policy Institute, the Global Centre on Cooperative Security, RESOLVE Network, the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation and Political Violence (ICSR), BRICS, Cairo International Centre for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding (CCCPA) and the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI).
