(MENAFN) Possibly to halt the spread of information over the protests and in the wake of growing protest in southern provinces, the Iraqi government has imposed a blockade on facebook across the country.
The social media platform, which is the most popular in Iraq, has also been blocked in the Kurdistan Region while it remains safe and away from protests.
It is not clear yet for how long the social media blockade is planned.
Tension has been building on in southern Iraqi provinces over rising unemployment and repeated power outages.
Roughly 80 percent of Iraq's overall crude oil exports originate from oilfields in Basra province, which its residents have complained that foreign nationals, rather than locals, were being employed by the domestic energy sector.
