Egypt's military kills 11 militias Northern Sinai

(MENAFN) 11 militias were killed by Egypt's military in Arish in the Northern side of Sinai, the military said on Wednesday.

Middle East News Agency (MENA) said that security services succeeded in targeting terrorists' stronghold in an abandoned house at Al-Omran neighborhood.

Three rifles and machine guns were confiscated, as well as dismantling two explosive devices held by the terrorists.

The Sinai Peninsula has remained the epicenter of a militant insurgency since 2013, when the army ousted Mohamed Morsi - Egypt's first freely elected president and a Muslim Brotherhood leader - in a military coup.

In early February, the Egyptian military launched a major campaign against "terrorist and criminal elements and organizations" across the country, focusing on the northern and central Sinai region, where Islamic State militants have waged a deadly insurgency against Cairo.
