Jordan- Deputy PM meets U.S. Congress delegation

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, June 30 (Petra) -- Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State Rajai Muasher on Saturday discussed with a delegation of US Congress members and congressional aides ties between Jordan and the United States and a number of Middle East issues.

Muasher expressed Jordan's thanks and appreciation for the continued support the Kingdom receives from the United States. He added that this support enhances the government's efforts to address economic challenges.

On regional issues, he emphasized that the Palestinian issue will remain Jordan's top priority, renewing the Kingdom's commitment to finding a just and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue based on the two-state solution He pointed out that any solution to the Palestinian issue must take into consideration the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state on their national soil, noting that the Palestinian people is the only people in the world that has no state.

The deputy premier said reducing the financial allocations of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) will adversely affect the Palestinian refugees and the level of services provided to them in the UNRWA's five areas of operations in Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

On the latest developments in southern Syria, Muasher voiced Jordan's full understanding of the difficult humanitarian situation in southern Syria. He stressed that the United Nations and concerned international organizations should take practical steps to help civilians inside Syrian territory.

The deputy prime minister said Jordan's ability to take in more refugees reached its maximum and could no longer receive more refugees in light of the limited financial resources and the enormous pressure on an already-strained infrastructure.

Members of the delegation said they are visiting Jordan to learn firsthand about the Kingdom's views on the latest developments in the Middle East and expressed their appreciation for the partnership between Jordan and the United States.

They also voiced their understanding of the magnitude of the challenges facing Jordan as a result of the Syrian crisis and burdens arising from the refugee crisis.

They stressed that Jordan has been and will remain an important factor of security and stability in the Middle East.
