Canada's Senate passes bill to legalize cannabis

(MENAFN) Canada might see cannabis in its markets within 8-12 weeks after the Senate approved of a bill to legalize it.

A vote of 52 to 29 in favor has approved of Bill C-45, with two abstentions, passing it for the royal assent of the governor general.

The legalization of cannabis has been a campaign pledge by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his Liberal Party.

It will enable adults in Canada to legally possess and use small amounts of recreational cannabis, setting out parameters around the production, safety standards, distribution, and sale of the drug.

Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould said that the bill represented "an historic milestone for progressive policy in Canada."
