Belgium to focus on crises in Yemen, Syria during UNSC membership


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, June 9 (KUNA) -- Belgium was elected yesterday, Friday, as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the period 2019-2020, with 181 out of 193 votes at the UN General Assembly.
Belgian Foreign Ministers Didier Reynders, in a statement welcomed the election results as "an expression of the trust given to our country by the international community." On his part, Belgian Minister for Development Cooperation Alexander De Croo, in a separate statement indicated that Belgium would pay great attention to the respect of international humanitarian law, the protection of human rights and gender issues during its two-year UNSC membership.
"The humanitarian aspects of the many crises around the world, with the wider Syria crisis, Yemen, South Sudan and the DRC (Democratic Republic of the Congo) immediately coming to mind, will obviously be an important focus of our membership," he pointed out. (end) nk.hb
