UN warns against attacking Yemen's Hodeidah port

(MENAFN) The United Nations is warning that a military attack or siege by Yemeni pro-government forces supported by a U.S.-backed, Saudi-led coalition on the port city of Hodeida will impact hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians.

"A military attack or siege on Hodeidah will impact hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians," she said.

"In a prolonged worst case, we fear that as many as 250,000 people may lose everything " even their lives."

Saudi Arabia formed a coalition to battle against Houthi rebels - allegedly backed by Iran - who took over most of the north including the capital Sanaa in September 2014.

The coalition launched a military campaign to push back the rebels and restore the internationally-recognised government to power.

Along with its air campaign, the Saudi-led coalition has imposed periodic blockades on Yemen's ports.
