KUWAIT CITY, May 27: Dr Mustafa Redha, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health, has said the Ministry is taking all the precautionary measures to prevent the Nipah virus (NiV) from India arriving into Kuwait. The Nipah virus has infected many areas of the southern Indian state of Kerala.

The minister pointed out, all precautionary measures have been taken at health facilities in coordination with the Ministry of Interior and the Public Authority for Food and Nutrition.

Redha added the ministry is keen to prevent this virus from reaching Kuwait, through coordination and communication with specialists of the World Health Organization and follow developments related to the virus to make necessary preparations and taking actions required to prevent it.

He explained the NiV infection is a newly emerging zoonosis that causes severe disease in both animals and humans. The natural host of the disease are bats and the symptoms of the disease appear similar to symptoms of influenza such as high body temperature and headache. 'The primary treatment for prevention is to reduce the risk of transmission of the virus and intensive health care,' he said.
