(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) RIYADH, May 19 (KUNA) -- The Saudi Royal Air Defense on Saturday destroyed a ballistic missile fired from Yemen on southern Saudi Arabia, Command of the Saudi-led Coalition Supporting Legitimacy in Yemen said.
Coalition spokesman Colonel Turki Al-Maliki said in a statement, relayed by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), that at 18:14 local time (15:14 GMT) the Saudi Royal Air Defense intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile fired by the Iran-backed "terrorist" Houthi militia from Yemen's Saada governorate.
Another missile fell on an uninhabited desert area, and no damage or casualties were reported, Al-Maliki said. The two missiles were targeting southern Saudi city of Khamis Mushait.
He stressed that both deliberately targeted populated areas.
This hostile action by the Houthi militia supported by Iran proves the continued involvement of the Iranian regime in providing the Houthi armed militia with qualitative capabilities in clear and explicit defiance of the UN resolution 2216 and resolution 2231 in order to threaten the security of Saudi Arabia and threaten regional and international security, the spokesman said.
"Launching ballistic missiles towards densely populated cities and villages runs counter to the international humanitarian law," he noted. (end) mdm.msa
