(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) GAZA, May 11 (KUNA) -- A Palestinian man on Friday was martyred and 167 others injured by the Israeli occupation forces' fire on the eastern borders of the Gaza Strip during the peaceful "Great March of Return," Palestinian Health Ministry in the Strip said.
The Palestinian people have been staging the "Great March of Return" in the Strip since March 30, the 42nd anniversary of Land Day.
A 40-year-old Palestinian man died after he had been shot in chest in eastern Khan Yunis, south of Gaza, spokesman for the ministry Asharf Al-Qudra said in a statement.
He added that 167 Palestinian protesters taking part in the peaceful march were injured by the Israeli army's bullets, noting that some others were wounded by tear gas fired by the army on the peaceful protesters on the eastern borders.
The Israeli army targeted reporters and medical teams, wounding some of them, he pointed out.
Today's march was the last one before commemorating the Nakba "Catastrophe" which falls on May 15 every year.
Nakba Day occurred in 1948 when 700,000 Palestinians were forced to flee as a result of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War and seek refuge in Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, the Strip and the West Bank.
Palestinians in today's march were holding up posters calling for returning to their land that they were forced to leave.
Confrontations erupted between the Palestinian protesters and the Israeli army as soon as they (Palestinians) performed Friday prayers. A large number of the protesters were wounded.
Meanwhile, the Israeli army announced that it put its troops on "high alert" for fear of development of matters on the borders during confrontations with Palestinians. (end) wab.hm
