EU: local elections in Tunisia step towards democratic consolidation
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, May 9 (KUNA) --- The European Union (EU) on Wednesday described the municipal elections, the first local democratic elections in Tunisia, held on Sunday as "an essential step in the democratic consolidation in Tunisia and in the ambitious decentralization process provided for in the 2014 Constitution." The EU has made a strong commitment to support the holding of these elections. Exceptionally for local elections, an EU Election Observation Mission has been deployed since 6 April, noted Maja Kocijancic, spokesperson for EU High Representative Federica Mogherini, in a statement.
They were able to testify to the good conduct of the elections, she said.
Following the adoption of the new Local Government Code in Tunisia on April 26, the EU is committed to supporting the capacity building of the new local authorities.
These will have an important role to play in consolidating participatory democracy at the local level, while remaining attentive and at the service of Tunisian citizens, added the statement. (end) nk.msa
