Filipina maid held for 'stealing diamond ring from employer'

A Filipina domestic worker arrested for allegedly stealing a diamond ring from her employer has been denied bail by a magistrate.

Jeambreth Algura appeared at the Kwun Tong Magistrates' Court on Friday to apply for temporary release after she was arrested on April 24 after her female employer reported to police that her diamond ring was missing, sunwebhk.com reported .

The ring was allegedly found later by the employer in the defendant's backpack.

The defendant's mother, who also works in Hong Kong, attended the hearing accompanied by an officer of the Consulate who assists Filipinos in the city.

The defendant's lawyer applied for bail of HK$1,000 (US$127) and told Magistrate Chu Chung-keung that the Consulate could house the defendant in its shelter.

But the magistrate refused the application and told the defendant she could apply for bail at the Court of First Instance.

The case was adjourned till May 31 and the defendant was remanded in custody.
