UAE- Egyptians to vote in presidential elections

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The Egyptian community in the UAE will be able to cast their votes in the presidential elections at the embassy in Abu Dhabi and the consulate in Dubai from Friday for three days.

Wael Gad, the Egyptian ambassador to the UAE, said both entities are set to receive the voters registered in the electoral college during the three-day elections from March 16-18. "The polling stations will be opened from 9am to 9pm, he said.

"Whoever wishes to cast their vote has to prove their identity either with a valid or even expired national ID card or a machine-read passport."

Tablets and electronic ID card readers are available at the polling stations for registration and voting, he stated. "Well-trained diplomatic and administrative cadres from the ministry of foreign affairs in Egypt will be available for help during the elections."

A big rush in the number of voters is expected. "The Egyptian community in the UAE is one of the biggest communities eligible for voting worldwide. To ensure voters' convenience, the embassy has prepared an air-conditioned tent with cold water dispenser machines. Our staff and cadres are more than ready to ease the procedures."

Gad affirmed that they have coordinated with Emirati authorities concerned to support and ease the procedures. "Voting is an original right and national mission for all Egyptians. Every one of us should perform his national duty and take part in drawing the future of his country," he said.

"The second round of voting for the presidential elections, if needed, will be held for Egyptians in the UAE from April 19 to 21."

Egyptians back home will be able to vote in the presidential elections for three days from March 26 to 28. Lasheen Ibrahim, chairman of the national election authority in Egypt, said: "The second round of the elections, if needed, will be held in Egypt from April 24 to 26. The final results of the first round will be announced on April 2, and on May 1 if a second round is held."
