Iraq announces Kirkuk, surrounding areas as disputed
(MENAFN) Federal Supreme Court of Iraq has modified one of its decrees regarding the Kurdistan Region in which it had previously announced that all Kurdish cities are counted as disputed areas, said a Kurdish official, according to Bas News.
"The Federal Supreme Court of Iraq has announced that only Kirkuk and the surrounding areas are considered as disputed areas, and not Sulaymaniya, Erbil, or any other Kurdish city in the region," said Amanj Rahim, the Cabinet Secretary at the Kurdistan Regional Government.
The court on October 29th last year said that any cities in Kurdistan Region are considered disputed.
Kurdistan Region is a recognized autonomous region based on the Iraqi Constitution, but Kirkuk, Khanaqin, and Makhmour have remained as disputed areas between the sides as those cities were governed by the former Baath regime.
