Kuwait- Mogherini: My number one wish is to see the Syrian conflict resolved

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, March 8 (KUNA) -- European Union (EU) High Representative Federica Mogherini said Thursday that her biggest wish is to resolve the Syrian conflict and her biggest surprise was the US decision to move its embassy to Jerusalem.

"As long as we don't work together on a political solution to the (Syrian) crisis under the UN auspices, the crisis will continue and the war will continue and for me this probably is the number one wish I would like to see resolved," she told the Brussels Forum this evening.

Mogherini said she discussed the Syrian crisis with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson when she met him in Kuwait, where the two had gone to attend the reconstruction conference on Iraq.

"We went together to the conference in Kuwait to support Iraq and to attend the anti-Daesh coalition meeting. We talked about Ukraine, Iran, the Middle East Peace Process, Syria and Iraq," she said.

When asked by the moderator what was for her the most surprising development recently, the EU foreign policy chief replied it was the US decision to move its embassy to Jerusalem.

"I think this exposes the US to some risks and potential risk of losing credibility in brokering an agreement. This surprised me the most," she added.

The Brussels Forum is an annual high-level meeting of the most influential North American and European political, corporate, and intellectual leaders to address pressing challenges currently facing both sides of the Atlantic.

It is organised by the German Marshall Fund of the US. (end) nk.sd
