Kuwait- Int. Min. Sheikh Khaled: Prison overcrowd being tackled

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KUWAIT, March 6 (KUNA) -- Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Khaled Al-Jarrah Al-Sabah on Tuesday declared a plan to establish a new jail and expel foreign inmates to their countries to tackle overcrowd at the central prison.

The minister made the announcement during today's parliamentary session, responding to MPs' queries about conditions at the central prison.

The ministry is dealing with this issue on two bases; building a new jail to absorb the extra number of prisoners and deporting a number of convicted foreigners to their home countries where states accept their comeback.

The central prison accommodation capacity is in the range of 2,500 inmates, however it is now packed with 6,000 ones, he disclosed.

Minister Sheikh Khaled said he had previously informed chairman and members of the parliamentary human rights committee about conditions at the central prison and his department's plans to resolve the problem.

On MPs' queries about installment of devices at the central prison to jam inmates' phone communications, he has affirmed that such bugs have been removed. (end) jy.rk
