US: "Jerusalem is off the table"
(MENAFN) On Monday, the leaders of the United States and Israel vowed to further strengthen ties as President Donald Trump said he might travel to Jerusalem to preside over the May opening of a new US embassy.
Hosting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, Mr Trump said his controversial decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital and move the embassy from Tel Aviv to the holy city had raised chances for ending the conflict, in spite of Palestinians' insistence otherwise.
Taking to the streets in a wide range protests, Palestinians and Arab nations have been enraged by the two moves that proved the failure of the US as a peace mediator.
The president said he had actually given peace "hopes" by removing Jerusalem being an obstacle in long-stalled negotiations that have collapsed under successive administrations of both political parties.
"Nobody could get past, No 1 Jerusalem," he said. "We've taken it off the table. So this gives us a real opportunity for peace."
