French FM to visit Iran March 5

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) PARIS, March 2 (KUNA) -- French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian will begin March 5 a two-day visit to Iran to discuss a number of important bilateral, regional and internaitonal issues, official sources said on Friday.
The French Foreign Ministry announced Le Drian's visit, which has been programmed for some time, but which has taken on more prominence in view of the conflict in Syria and the escalating tensions in the region.
Le Drian is expected to reassure Tehran about France's full commitment to the 2015 nuclear agreement signed between the United States, Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany, and the Iranian side.
The deal has been called into question by US President Donald Trump who has refused to certify it and is warning the US could revoke the continued easing of sanctions against Iran.
But the other five partners who signed the deal with Iran are keen to keep it as it stops proliferation on the Iranian side and blocks the development of nuclear weapons by Tehran.
On the other hand, Le Drian has said many times ahead of his visit that he wants Iran to rein in its ballistic missile programme which he says is a factor of "destabilisation" in the region and he also wants a review of Iran's other activities in supporting certain movements or groups in several countries, among them Syria, Iraq, Lebanon and Yemen.
