Kuwait- EU warns of false steps on Jerusalem

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, Feb 26 (KUNA) -- EU High Representative Federica Mogherini warned Monday that any "false step" regarding the Middle East Peace Process and the status of Jerusalem could strengthen the hand of radicals in the region or even spark a religious war.

"What brought us here, the ministers of the Arab League and the ministers of the European Union is the concerns that we have that any false step on the Middle East Peace Process, on Jerusalem in particular, can strengthen the radicals position, close the space who still want to live together in peace and could turn the political conflict into a religious conflict," she told a press conference after a EU-Arab League ministerial meeting today.

"It is not a signal to send threats. It is a way to contributing to finding a good way to move forward. We are not against anyone. We are working with everybody," she said.

Observers noted that Mogherini's message was directed against the US decision to shift its embassy to Jerusalem next May.

The EU foreign policy chief said: "We had a long and very positive and constructive meeting with the countries of the Arab League plus the Secretary General of the Arab League on our common work to re-launch the Middle East Peace process." "We have full convergence of purpose first and foremost to preserve the horizon of two state as the only viable one with Jerusalem as the capital of both the state of Israel and the state of Palestine," she stated.

In reply to a question by the Kuwait news agency, KUNA, on the role of Gulf countries to revive the Middle East Peace Process, Mogherini replied that "we found each other on the same page in terms of recognizing the high importance that we both attach to the Arab-Israeli conflict." "We have always thought that the Arab peace initiative could be a very interesting basis for moving forward," she added.

Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al Jubeir and UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed AL Nahyan, were part of the Arab League delegation that included Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Morocco Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Jordan Ayman Safadi, , Egyptian Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Palestinian National Authority Riyad Al Maliki and Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit.(end) nk.ibi
